Here are some of the most popular wedding dress fabrics, and some of the ways they are used the most when creating wedding dresses.
Chiffon
A classic in wedding dress fabrics – this sheer, lightweight material is stunning when used in wedding dress designs. Chiffon has no sheen, so if you don’t like shiny, satin look dresses, this may be a good option for your dress! However, because it isn’t a very stiff wedding dress fabric, it is not as suitable for structured dress designs. This wedding dress fabric is best suited to flowy, loose fitting wedding gowns.
Satin
Satin finish wedding dress fabrics are great if you want a smooth finish, shiny gown. It is often made from fibres such as silk or nylon, creating a fabulous, eye-catching finish. Satin finish wedding dress fabrics are thicker than some other materials, therefore great for more structured gowns.
Lace
Lace is a beautiful and elegant way to add texture to your wedding dress. It can be layered over a more opaque wedding dress fabric, or a sheer fabric such as chiffon, for a classic wedding look. Lace is a timeless wedding dress fabric that can be used for structured, tight-fitted wedding dresses, or manipulated to fit a loose fitting gown.
Tulle
Often used for veils, tulle is a wedding dress fabric that can be used for a draping princess gown effect. It can be layered over thicker wedding dress fabrics for a more structured gown with more body, whilst maintaining that airy, whimsical look.
Organza
Organza is a wedding dress fabric that is similar to chiffon in that it is sheer, however it is more stiff. Therefore, it is better than chiffon for more structured gowns or dresses with lots of body. It is ideal if you like the look of chiffon but your dress design requires more body in the train, or if you want more volume in your veil.
Charmeuse
This wedding dress fabric is a gorgeous lightweight material that has lots of shine. The silky wedding dress fabric is best for loose fitting, flowy, and relaxed wedding dresses. Great for your wedding dress if you are getting married in the summer or in a humid location.
